PRESS RELEASE UPDATE I-85 REST AREA SHOOTING

PRESS RELEASE UPDATE
I-85 REST AREA SHOOTING

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office developed a lead and has made an arrest in the recent I-85 Rest Area Shooting, where 43 year old victim Gregory McKee was shot in the back, leaving him paralyzed from the thighs down. After placing a video of a person of interest on the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Facebook and putting it out to local and national media outlets, the Sheriff’s Office gained valuable information that has led to the arrest of 26 year old, b/m, Darren Tyron Manuel of 15017 Willow Glen Road, Charlotte, N.C. Manuel is charged with Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury. Again, this arrest stems from the November 28, 2015 incident at the Interstate 85 Rest Area located at near mile marker 60 on Interstate 85 south in Cabarrus County, N.C.

The victim in this case, Gregory McKee, was traveling with his family from Virginia back to Gaston County when they stopped at the rest area. Mr. McKee was approached in the restroom by two black males who pointed a gun at him. As Mr. McKee attempted to run from the restroom, he was shot in the back. Both black male suspects fled from the scene. Mr. McKee is still hospitalized at this time.

Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest of Mr. Manuel last night (Tuesday, 12/01/15) at his residence in Charlotte, with the assistance of Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD, Mecklenburg County Probation & Parole, and the FBI. Manuel is in the Cabarrus County Jail with a $2,000,000 secured bond. Manuel is also awaiting service of a Parole Violation. This is an ongoing investigation and we appreciate any help the public can offer in identifying and locating additional suspect(s).

By Robin l. Gardner

The ninth annual golf tournament to raise funds for Cabarrus County Crime Stoppers will be held Monday, Nov. 7 at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis.

This is the sole fundraiser to fund Crime Stoppers for the year. The majority of the money raised pays for the tips supplied by the public to solve crimes that might otherwise go unsolved.

Crime Stoppers is a program designed to draw out information from the public that might otherwise not be revealed to police.
